Laying On Of Hands Healing

Laying on of hands healing of the afflicted has occurred in many cultures over thousands of years.  In the Christian tradition, laying hands on the sick to heal them was a common practice in the early Church.

The Bible recounts that Jesus often laid hands on people before healing them:

“At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.”  Luke 4:40.

“On the Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years.  She was bent over and could not straighten up at all.  When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, ‘Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.”  Luke 13: 10-13.

The Bible recounts how the Apostle Paul laid hands on a sick person and he was healed:

“There was an estate nearby that belonged to Publius, the chief official of the island.  He welcomed us to this home and showed us generous hospitality for three days.  His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery.  Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him.  When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured.”  Acts 28: 7-9.

Jesus appeared to the eleven Disciples and told them how their followers would perform laying on of hands healing:

“He said the them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. . . . And these signs will accompany those who believe:  In my name . . . they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.’ ”  Mark 16: 15-18.

I was raised as a Christian and strongly believe in the power of Jesus Christ to heal the physical and emotional pain and suffering of the sick.  I see nothing inconsistent with all of the healing traditions in which I have been trained.  They all incorporate and channel the power of God the divine to help the afflicted.  The power of God and the divine power of the universe are one in the same.  The power of God and the universe is in each of us, and can be accessed for our healing and for the healing of others.  This is what I do my best to accomplish when I perform laying on of hands healing.
